ELVIS 2015 - CAPTAINS REPORT by Ava and Grant

ELVIS 2015 - CAPTAINS REPORT by Ava and Grant
A review of the 2015 Series

Having made a slow recovery from the large volume of alcohol consumed at the ELVIS celebrations here is our report on what has been a great ELVIS series all round for all clubs and their members but most of all for ELR.

The series began on Grant's birthday, 12th May 2015.

The first race was hosted by Havering 90. It was a 5 mile race in and around Raphael Park, Romford. ELR had a big turn out of 58 runners and the evening was a great success.
Both the ELR Ladies and Men's teams were first and in addition many ELR members scooped prizes across both sexes and age categories. The ELR trophy haul took up almost a whole table in the Harvester where the ELR contingent retired for drinks following the race! An excellent start to the series.

Next up was Elvis 2 hosted by Orion Harriers at Chingford.
Another good turnout from ELR in this race with 56 members running. The Ladies were first again. The Men were second to hosts Orion, however Ilford our closest rivals in the competition were third. Therefore, both the Ladies and Men had already taken a good lead in the series going into Elvis 3.

Elvis 3 was a 5K race hosted by Eton Manor in Leyton.
ELR numbers were bolstered by the Beginners Broup which had started in early May. 76 EL Runners made it to the start line. A record turnout in the series. The large ELR turnout caused much consternation amongst our rivals, particularly because the race sold out and entries were closed sometime before the race began! Both the Ladies and Men were first, the ladies being pushed hard by a strong Eton Manor ladies turnout in their home race. Following the race many ELR members enjoyed post run drinks and food to round off a fantastic evening for the club.

Elvis 4 was hosted by Dagenham 88 and will live long in the memory of everyone who attended that evening either to run or support.
The race was run in temperatures of around 95° with conditions similar to running in a sauna. 63 members from ELR packed the field of 166 runners and there were landslide victories for both the ladies and men. A magnificent turn out in the conditions.

Next up was Elvis 5 the Hilly 5 hosted by Ilford AC at Hainault Forest.
80 members from ELR competed.
Another record turnout. The Ladies were again comfortable winners. The Men also managed to secure a narrow victory over Ilford in what is usually a crucial race in the series. The team victories in this race meant that for all intents and purposes the series would be won by both the Ladies and Men even though there were still two races left. ELR members really enjoyed their after race drinks watching the sun go down over the Essex horizon.

Elvis 6 was hosted by Barking Road Runners in Barking Park.
Unfortunately this race seems to be cursed with bad weather almost every year and this was no exception. The race was run in pouring rain and the debut appearance by Gaz was most welcome. Unfortunately the Men were defeated by a strong Ilford turn out but the Ladies continued their 100% record and were victorious again.

Elvis 7 was as everyone knows the last in the series hosted by ourselves at Valentines Park. The Charity 5k Race.
Once again we put on a great race in excellent conditions. The result was the same as Elvis 6 with the Ladies completing the clean sweep of victories in all seven races and the Men finishing 2nd to Ilford. However the earlier results in the series meant that the lead taken by the men was unassailable and therefore both the ELR ladies and men were first in the series. Thanks to everyone who took part. A great team effort.

ELVIS 2015 Awards.
In addition to winning both of the Team prizes, we also had a number of individuals who were successful in their respective categories.

In the ladies we dominated the top of the order.
First in the series was Jenny Ansell, followed by Karen Levison in second and Ava Lee in third.

In addition both Karen and Ava were first in their respective Veteran age categories.

In the Men's category our men boasted four of the top five in the series.
First was Tom Grimes, Third was Patrick Brown, Fourth was Paul Quinton and Fifth was Alex Day.

12 members of ELR achieved the feat of completing all seven races in the series.

We also had an incredible 47 runners complete at least five of the seven races to qualify for an individual ranking at the end of the series. Congratulations to everyone who completed at least five races.

Our success in the series reflects how far our fantastic club has come in the last few years.

We would like to thank every single person who ran in any of the seven races and all our great supporters who were out cheering us on throughout. It's been fantastic to see so many runners supporting the club in the series as well as enjoying their excellent performances and seeing many improve dramatically as the series unfolded.

It was lovely to see our Beginners starting to compete in the races after they were convinced that taking part was a good idea!

It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves so much before during and after races when we enjoyed our get-togethers for drinks or tea and coffee depending on the race times.

So, Elvis has returned to Graceland for the winter. However, he will be back for the 2016 series. Can we beat our record turn outs of 447 (yes 447) finishers this year in the 2016 series? Can we improve on the 130 members who ran in at least one race in the series. Can we repeat our victories in both the ladies and men's categories? Can the ladies complete another clean sweep of winning all seven races? Only YOU can make that happen. Roll on 2016. Come on ELR!

Ava and Grant.
