Report from Grant covering Elvis 1 - 3

19th June 2012.

The ELVIS series this year has a slightly different feel to it as the calendar has been altered somewhat with the Olympics in mind.

The first race this year was the Eton Manor 5k in Leyton on 27th May. The race was run in what has turned out to be the only hot weather of the year so far. A number of us were grateful it was only a 5k run and not longer! There was a large entry of over 202 runners but ELR managed the highest attendance with an excellent turnout of 32 runners. The men were led home by Thomas closely followed by Ciaran and Patrick our three senior scorers. Our three scoring vets were Manjit, Derek and Paul. Our Ladies were somewhat depleted as a result of relocation, injury and pregnancy but our ten lady runners did the club proud, with Rocio, Jamee, Tricia and Mary Connolly scoring for the club. Orion men turned out a strong team and secured first place ahead of our men who were a creditable second out of the eight competing teams. Our ladies also did well, finishing third behind Eton Manor whose ladies are a force to be reckoned with this year, finishing first in all three ELVIS races so far.

A solid start but it has become clear from early on that the competition this year will be strong. I would like to give a quick mention to Andrew Baxter who bravely tried to run despite a niggling injury but was forced to pull up due increasing discomfort. Andrew epitomised the spirit in the club by trying to run and help the scoring as best as he could.

However, he returned for ELVIS 2 ON 12/6/12 , like Ciaran still not on top form but out to do his best despite being below 100%.

When I arrived for ELVIS 2, the Havering 90 Joggers midweek 5 miler it looked like we would have a good attendance for a midweek run but by the time the race was due to start I was astounded to see we had amassed some 28 runners with a massive attendance from our men. As they say when the going gets tough the tough get going and ELR certainly did that at Havering. The course had been sensibly changed to start inside rather than outside Raphael Park, leaving runners to complete a short circuit in the park before completing two laps as usual in the surrounding area on a fast, relatively "flat" course where pbs are a strong possibility. ELR runners duly obliged with no less than 5 pb's.

The ELR men won the Team race and were led home again by Thomas, followed by Brendan making a welcome return and Mark with a PB , our three senior scorers. Our three vet scorers were led in again by Mr consistent Manjit Bedi, Danny "fresh" from his marathon and Andrew to secure a comfortable win for the men with the top twenty finishers dominated by ELR runners. Our Ladies had 7 runners , led home by Ava who was second lady home and a prize winner, followed by our new member Lisa Mullen, Tricia scoring again and Sarah who is looking strong ahead of her triathlon. Our ladies were narrowly beaten into fourth place but were only one point off second going into ELVIS 3 at Dagenham on 17/6/12.

ELVIS 3, the Dagenham 88 5 mile'sh (5.5 miles) proved to be an unusual fathers day for me with a car accident in Mrs Conway's car before the race and organisational problems for our hosts meaning Zac and I having to guess where the start line was for the fun run which proved to be almost twice the advertised distance! Still Zac did well beating a number of adults and kids to finish second and a good warm up for me before the main event. The main race ended up being 3 laps of Eastbrook End Park. Another great turnout by both Genders for ELR , 11 ladies and 26 men who made their way round a technical course with many twists and turns, differing conditions underfoot with stony paths and grass as well as a trip through a small rubbish tip at one point! The men once again dominated the race with 7 runners in the top twenty men and 17 in the top 50 , a tremendous effort. Unfortunately Ava was unable to run through injury which she did her best to worsen by falling down a ditch whilst spectating!, but our ladies did the club proud again.

The official results and scorers are awaited but I calculate our ladies were second behind Eton Manor which puts them in second place overall with the lowest overall points total for our scoring runners in the series. I have our men now in the lead by a narrow margin over Orion and Ilford but with clubs being able to drop their two worst scores it is going to be close as far as the all important final team standings are concerned when the series finishes in September. Our final positions could literally come down to one single runner from ELR who may not score but by beating scoring runners from another club(s) in the middle or back of the field could help the club to a higher overall placing. I reiterate, every single run for the club counts no matter how fast you are.

The next ELVIS run is on a Wednesday at Hainault Forest on 18th July, so please make a note in your calendars and try and run if at all possible. As strong show at Hainault will be vital as we reach the half point in what is proving to be an exciting series. Well done everyone who has run and supported in the series so far but there is plenty of work to do. Come on ELR!

Grant Conway

Mesage for the East London Ladies - 21st May 2012

From Karen Levison ELR ELVIS Ladies Captain!
Unfortunately after 4 months of trying to hobble through a persisting piriformis injury it has left me no choice but to stop running and seek further treatment. This means I will not be around for the first ELVIS race on 27th May at Eton Manor. I apologise that I have not been along on Wednesday nights for quite some time to gee you all up and ensure we have a good turnout. Hopefully you are all aware of how well we have done in previous years in both the Mens and Ladies events and are currently reigning champions. It would be great to get off to a good start so it is important that we have strength as well as depth as every position affects the end result. Good luck to you all and I hope to be back at the club very soon.
