Sarah reports:- So it turns out i do still hate running marathons. Just a shame it took me 26.2 mile to remember. But not having a goal other than deciding if you'd ever do it again is quite liberating. At least i got my vitamin D quota today and ran off some Christmas excess. 87 finishers.

Arriving at the race HQ, there were a mass of runners and windsails crammed on to the small green adjacent to the quaint public house 'The Fox' and the old 'All Saints' Church, dating back to Norman times. The runners were still arriving at the congested start area after a five minute walk/jog along narrow tracks, when the pistol fired for the start of the race. The course consisted of two laps (approx five miles) along trails by the side of some fields on the Letchworth Greenway and was flat except for a small incline shortly after the start of the lap. Conditions were perfect with very little breeze or mud and a slight chill in the air. Only the second year to be held at Willian and more a trail race than traditional cross country, this is nevertheless a welcome addition to the Sunday League calendar. With mini choc rolls and tea or coffee on the green and church bells ringing, a very enjoyable morning of racing was completed. Many thanks to Thomas Grimes, Antonio Martin Romero, Paul Marshall and Doug Mansell for their commitment to this club fixture.

Pelham Half Marathon, New York - Saturday 26th November 2016

Good evening ELR. A race report for your delectation on the Pelham Half marathon and 10K event in the Bronx on Saturday 26th November. Apologies for it being so late and my non-attendance on Monday and this evening but I have wicked man lurgy after returning this Saturday.

Staying with my sister Jessica Grainger, ex of this parish now Manhattan Lady for Thanksgiving we booked in the Pelham half and 10K knowing nothing about it other than why not. Jessica Grainger has run with ELR on club nights a few times and booked in for the 10K whilst I booked in for the half.

With our usual organisational aplomb we found out late the night before that it was actually an 8.00 am start at the very top of the Bronx on Pelham Bay which meant a 5.45 am wake up to get sorted and there. My sisters first words that morning coming out of her room were "I hate you". Porridge and passive aggressive coffee done we jumped an Uber there as we, unsurprisingly, hadn't planned the route.

I was fairly certain we would be the only Brits until the loo queue where we were greeted by 4 Union Jack vests who belonged to a mad UK running family and were very pleased to see us. The organisers took great delight in photographing us all together.

The half and 10 K kicked off together at 8.00 am with about 400 starters. I knew I wouldn't be running a PB here as I was more Turkey and Apple Pie than human at this point, and also had no idea of terrain. The route took us round closed roads with the NYPD closing traffic through some very expensive looking houses on lovely lined avenues and hills. Yes, Hills. Didn't expect that. Monster buggers too. At one point I thought we may have been trans-mutated to San Francisco. The organisers were even kind enough to number them (Hill 1/7 and so on). I felt a large pang of reticence as I was kind of expecting an easy ish fun run after 5 HM's in the last couple of months and not planning on pushing myself too much. American runners seem to like to talk a lot. Even at 7.15 minute miles in a half marathon so I tried to hold up the polite Brit bit. As usual when I am confronted by hills I am resoundingly overtaken going up, but mostly re-overtake on the way down, lot's of "O you agains!". The weather was glorious sunshine and mild and the atmosphere very positive.

I was fairly steady the whole way round but that was thanks to a lot of halves in recent weeks more than resolve. I really was just enjoying the experience. The race was pretty much a series of 7 steep hills and descents apart from a detour out to the coast for the HM race which was really quite stunning looking out into Pelham Bay. Well organised, marshalled and supported with several water stations and lots of "You Got This" type support.

Coming over the finish line it was lovely to have my sister waiting for me with a smile and a cheer, particularly as she had a big smile on her face having won 2nd prize in her age cat for the 10K. She didn't hate me any more. Her kids now have her in Hero runner status.

The organiser who we chatted with after had started it with 9 people 5 years ago and was very pleased to have international support as his race grows. Very happy, we grabbed a coffee and a race bag (GooseGrease anyone?) and a good medal. Train back to Grand Central and job done.

Thank you so much for the joint club runner of the month accolade, it was a lovely surprise whilst I was in NYC and a great start to the festive period for me.

Jonathan writes:
A short race report on the French Riviera Marathon.
Course - mainly flat with just a few hills thrown in.
Water and feed stations - every 2.5km and well stocked with water and cola, dried and fresh fruits
Goodie Bag - a rucksack with other goodies provided at the expo and the obligatory Tshirt, medal, bag of fruit, water, madeleines, Haribos and a fromage et jambon roll provided at the finish.
Number of runners - 8000 enlisted marathoners, plus a 6 runner relay (each leg 3 - 10km) and a 2 runner (2x 21.1km) relays, but this still only brought the total runners to approx. 14000.
Average temp - 20C
Recommended race? Definitely. This was my third marathon of 2016. 3:26:09 - 2nd personal best, and despite recent injury and uncertainly as to actually start I have to admit I am quite pleased.
Thanks to all those that have repaired, supported and encouraged me. Too many to mention, but you know who you are.

A beautiful morning in Groveland's Park for the cross country. Making their Sunday league debuts were Chloe Millan, Billy Rayner, Dan Dan Senior and Paul Anthony. We had 17 runners start in total but unfortunately Mike Brett pulled up with hamstring problem. First back for ELR was Thomas Grimes - 3rd overall and Amy Amor Boorn was 1st ELR lady. Thanks to Don Bennett for these photos whilst called upon for marshalling duties. The morning was completed with some lovely cake and we were still back at Wanstead by just after 12.30. The next fixture is at Willian, Herts on Sunday 18th December at the earlier time of 10.00am. Mike.

Main objective was to beat the people who are around me in the OCR League, and somehow I still beat them! Luck was in, now for the UK Champs next week, straight after a night shift...

Maya reports:-
My first venture into the QEOP 10k series this morning. I'm not sure why I haven't done one before - it's a great race. Thank you for booking it up for us Katy Taylor!

I was put off by three laps, but actually, once I realised that it was just a 2 mile lap (this realisation was at the end of the first lap, maths is not my strong point!) I felt much chirpier.

The 2 short sharp ups were contrasted by nice downs, and there was lots to look at along the canal, and I do love a towpath. At about 1.5 miles I heard a quiet 'pick your feet up love!' And there was Jonathan on his bike on the way home from parkrun. That was a lovely surprise, and kept me going, wondering if I'd see him again, (I did 😊) and not wanting him to see me walk.

I'd like to say I didn't walk, but I was caught at the end having a 'pre finish breather' by Jonathan. Damnit! I thought I was out of sight!

If I hadn't walked then I would have come close to an ELR PB*, double-damnit, but that just means I have a reason to go back next month and try harder.

£15 - well organised, a medal and a goodie bag. And... TOILETS. A lady of my age sets a lot of store by a naice toilet you know.

* I have been faster than my ELR times, years ago, before I joined, but I don't have those recorded anywhere, so I've decided to start again now they're on the website, as that's more encouraging. I'm all about self encouraging you know.
567 finishers.

Josh reports:- Saturday - 15km main event

Feeling good I hit the first uphill and set into the techincal trail section. The first few kilometres allowed me to move up the field, with walls, barbed wire crawls etc not giving me too many issues. Then i hit the rig... They had changed the configuration, and I made it 3/4 across before losing momentum and slipping off. I tried again and got to the same section before falling again. I had a nice sit down, and after 6 attempts and 45 minutes I managed to get across! Celebratory high five with the marshall and I set off again, for all of 50metres and I reached the sandbag carry again! I tried my hardest to make up ground, taking out Skull Valley and Stairway to Heaven at the first go. A second rig caused me no problems, even though it was only 3 foot high! Smash down the mountain and I hit the event village. Not long to go! Monkey bars done. 8foot wall done. Irish Table done. Zipwire done eventually! Over the final wall and finally the finish! I was so relieved i cartwheeled down the finish straight! Im no gymnast so it looked horrific!
I kept by band but the 800metres of elevation and huge delay at the rig meant I took 4 hours. Just into the bottom half of the age group racers but happy.

Friday - 3km sprint

I thought 3km would be a nice easy way to start the champs. I was wrong! 180m of elevation kicked my butt, especially the half mile carrying a 50lb sandbag. Mandatory obstacle completion didnt affect me as I was able to get across the rig (see video on my other post) first time. I did fall off one obstacle but hit it second time. Ended up finishing in the top 3rd of the competitive wave (if you completely failed an obstacle you dropped to a different results section) and finished in just over 30 mins.

Tom Woods reports:- Just completed my 20th marathon here in Chicago and have really enjoyed the whole weekend here. The weather has been perfect , as it was in Berlin also 2 Weeks ago with clear blue skies and at around 16 to 18 Celsius , just ideal , not just for running , but for sightseeing.
all in all feeling satisfied with my results for the Year. With Boston in April at 3:50 , Berlin also 3:50 and Chicago today 3:46. I am now at the point where it is time to cut back on the marathons and from now on I will be just doing Boston each Year for as long as I am able to meet the qualifying standards. I have a place in next years Boston and after Today's performance 2018 is as good as guaranteed with 8:51 inside the required time needed.
My long term goal will be to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 2019 , directly after Boston.
Now time to go and stuff my face with food from my favourite eatery over here - Whole Foods Market

Shahib reports:- Not a PB, but still absolutely thrilled with 03:59:07, my son's first marathon with me, special thanks to Samia Müller-Choudhury and Carlton D'Souza (mate, you know why), perfect weather, flat course, ideal for a PR (not that PR, but 'personal record' as I learnt they say it here). Given training ideal outcome. Onto VLM17 now...

Michael Wilson reports:-.A total of 25 East London Runners' lined up at Hog Hill for the start of the first Chingford League fixture, last night. There was a closely contested race between the first two ELR ladies - Ellie Wilkinson and Roisin Archer. The lead changed a couple of times with Ellie just edging it up the final hill to the finish, to the applause of the gallery! In the men's race, Thomas Grimes finished 3rd overall with Patrick Brown next ELR man home. There a lot of good performances but a mention also for 'speedy' Spencer Evans, who smashed his PB for this course and at each lap, milked the adulation from the ELR ladies who stayed behind to support! There were many debuts at Hog Hill yesterday: Amy Amor Boorn, Liz O'Donnell, Chloe Millan, Caroline McGirr, Roisin Archer, Andy Kumar, John Paul Healy, Billy Rayner, Shaun DeSena, Paul Marshall, James Nichols and Graham Peacock. Thanks to Craig Craig Livermore (photos), Frank Brownlie and Diana Diana Rexhepaj's partner John, for their support.

A trail Half Marathon run from Tanygrisiau Station to Harbour Station along the Ffestiniog Railway. 151 finishers.

Steve Bywater: A half baked plan, cooked up at the London Marathon mile 20 water station came to fruition on a bright North Welsh Saturday morning in September.

Three East London Runners stepped onto a steam train at Porthmadog harbour for chapter one of their Trailffest adventure. Steve Bywater (a quarter Welsh), Janet Bywater (Tom Jones fan and mother of two children who are an eighth Welsh) and Gareth Jones (classic Welsh name, brought up in Wales, but not actually Welsh) took the leisurely trip up a mountain to the start line.

Our red ELR t-shirts were the focus of much interest from the 150 or so other runners, many of whom couldn't believe three "southern softies" had traveled 200 miles for this well kept local secret of a race, but soon our presence emboldened a few other fake Cockneys to identify themselves from other far-flung places such as Kentish Town and Hillingdon.

With a toot from the watching steam train, the race began. The supposedly downhill course started with a steep uphill stretch followed by a queue to get over a narrow bridge. It soon became clear that us city types should best focus on completing the course rather than thinking about an impressive time, as we ran over loose slate, brown bog water, shallow streams, up and down steps, through people's back gardens, along narrow railside tracks, over stiles and through kissing gates. We went through forests, alongside sheer drops and around lakes. Every now and then we would smell and hear the steam train that followed us down the course with supporters cheering or heckling us as we made our way, further from the mountains and closer to the sea.

This was a brilliant event - well organised with some of the most remotely placed marshals I've ever seen guiding us through the technical course and shouting words of encouragement like "It's not like Hackney is it?". There were plenty of climbs, few downhill stretches to get into any kind of rhythm and although the scenery was stunning, we spent most of our journey studying the trail ahead, making sure we didn't trip or slip over the many natural hazards.

All good things must come to an end and eventually we hit "the Cob", a long sea wall which guided us to the very welcome finish despite the efforts of the wind to blow us into the water. The goodie bag included a bottle of local beer and a Trailffest bottle opener so it was inevitable that we ended up in the station bar to "rehydrate" and got to see the awesome local runners (looking like they'd just done a parkrun rather than a challenging half marathon) collecting their prizes.

The last thing the announcer said was that it was good that people were now coming from far and wide to enjoy Trailffest, "even as far as London". So who's up for Trailffest 2017?

Race Reports
Ciaran's
It all started with a random text received from Aaron Williams back at the start of July, "Fancy doing the Essex Way, but as a team of 2". "Yes", I replied, then promptly forgot about, but the commitment had been made.
Over the next 8 weeks of what should have been training for this challenge, work, holiday, parkrun, Orion 5k on the rides and Sunday morning lie-ins all seemed to take precedent to longer runs & substantial training. Somehow before I knew it, it was Wednesday 31st August, Aaron and I were both at club. Essex way 4 days away, and tonights 10k club run hurt. How on earth will I manage the tandem team for the Essex Way on Sunday? To top things off, Aaron had jumped the gun, totted the mileage and declared he was doing the even legs, 39miles, leaving me to face 43 miles.
The challenge was daunting. I would be in uncharted territory after 28-29 miles having never run longer than this, and the interval nature of the challenge, would this help or hinder?
T-1 day to go: Saturday I spent the day planning the logistics. Post codes, start points, start times, distances, running time, drive time, recovery time, all pulled together into a nice spreadsheet. Maybe less time in Excel and more on my feet training, but the logistics are an integral part of the day ahead.

Epping station marked leg one of this challenge. Martin Clark & Sally Gillam greeted everyone, beaming gleefully at the start of the day. News of Aaron and my task ahead had been rumoured among the other Essex Way team entrants. Quote of the day came at Epping station when I was told "You know there are good psychiatrists in East London", referring to our obvious level of madness.
Timing for the day in my beautiful spreadsheet had been based on the "uber achievable" 9:30 minute miles. All we got to do is start slow, resist temptation, and stay slow. Today is more about personal challenge and achievement, than about times. Great, no hassle, that was until the off on Leg 1. Oops! 5:45/km was my target. 4:25, 4:30, 4:45, 5:10, clocked the first 4. Finally on the fifth, 5.30. Somewhere close to target. From here I attached myself to a runner who knew the route, but therein came the disintegration of my plan. He was running 8 minute miles. A price worth sticking to to avoid having to self-navigate.

Legs 1, 3 & 5 were shared with Billy Rayner, Dave Knight and Dominic Dragonetti. With Julie whizzing me from the ends, to my following starts. For these legs, I pretty much stuck to 8 minute miles, and I found the rest was working in favour. My downfall came at Leg 7. After my shortest rest period and "race" to get to leg 7, I was starting to hurt. By now 27miles in, and beginning to enter that "New Territory" in terms of distance. Maud Hudson was my ELR partner in crime for the next 11.2 miles. I had run this leg before, but didn't know it well. The first half was tough, but bearable. The second half terrible. I was trying to concentrate on running form, but by now this had gone to pot! It was more about putting one foot in front of the other and not stopping. I started to feel queasy and dizzy, needing my emergency energy bar from my back pocket. By now the miles were ticking by with what seemed to be an lifetime in between, however the energy bar got me to the end of the leg, and with a break to the water and Lucozade, Full Fat Coke! Y-E-S!

By Now Aaron was on Leg 8, and I had my final, and shortest leg to go in #9, being 5.3 miles. I had told myself if I get to the end of leg 7, there would be no bailing out on 9. And so it was to be. With my GPS packing in by now, I relied on counting 9-10 minutes to assume each mile ticked on this final stretch. The scenery now changed from forest & farmland to encroaching coastland and marsh. I was again concentrating on form rather than speed, and declared to myself I am going to enjoy the final 5.3 miles. And so I did. Every step marked a step closer to the finish, and a step closer to bagging this incredible challenge. The miles were slow, but didn't last a lifetime anymore. The finish, Glorious!
2017? "Opposite Legs" suggested by Jonathan Wooldridge. A stupid man may do something once, but a mad man will do it again and again. So no, I don't intend on seeking out the best of East London's Psychiatrists. Memories gained. Achievements made. Lessons learnt. 2017 = 1, maybe 2 legs only.

Aaron's
The Essex Way is a glorious 80 mile relay from Epping to Harwich on what always feels like the last day of summer and the change of season. I've done this race many times before, always adored it and wanted to celebrate it differently this year by persuading another nut to run the entire race with me, alternately, as two-man team.

Ciaran Canavan kicked off the first leg of our 10 x/c legs from Epping at 8am - once started I left with my driver (and wife) Julie to the second start point at Ongar. Due to pacing plans, by the time anyone of us would finish a leg, the other would have already began theirs. So five minutes after my race start, driver (and wife) Julie sped Ciaran to Start 3 (and my finish) at High Easter. Repeat for 10 legs. I didn't see Ciaran again that day until Harwich.

The first leg for me was a sinch, and felt great. The plan was to run around 9.30mm - no problem! The trick was to keep hydrated as much as possible, stretch during the short recovery times and think positively - and most importantly, don't get carried away and go to fast. I finished the first leg 10 mins ahead of schedule...

By Leg 5 (6pm) and heroic last leg into Harwich, I was overtaken by the oldest competitor of the race, an octogenerian at mile 1. Realising I was in last place, and with said woman disappearing from sight, I realised I had no clue where I was going and no map. Panic and heart rate increased big time. Luckily pity was taken on me by a Harwich lady (Elspeth) who escorted me the final four miles at a slower than walking pace. With two miles from home, her husband appeared on seafront and offered me a lift in his motor to the finish. It took a lot of willpower to turn his lift down. The thought of potentially years of piss-taking from our leader Frank, kept me from temptation (he's still lording his Orion 15 triumph over me from 2006).

A kind and welcoming cheer awaited me from the handful of runners left packing up, and although it was the thought of fish and chips and a pint of Adnams that motivated me most of the day, it was the last thing on earth I wanted or could stomach!

I love the Essex Way, but will be doing Leg 1 from Epping to Ongar next year. And will need a lift from another driver.

Much love to Jules and Ciaran and everyone from ELR who ran with us that day!

Run Through Lee Valley Velopark Half Marathon - Sunday 31st July 2016

Ciaran writes:
Lee valley velopark was my choice of venue this morning for the Run Through half marathon. My preparation for the 13.1 undulating laps on the outdoor cycle track did not exactly go to plan. It started yesterday afternoon with Prosecco, followed by beer, red wine, and then shots of Jaegermister. To say one was feeling a little fragile this morning would be an understatement.
Somehow I had remembered to set my phone alarm for 6:30. What! Another 30 minutes, which actually turned into an extra 45 minutes in bed. The challenge then was to force feed myself coffee and porridge before the short cycle to the Olympic park and the velodrome.
Arriving about 25 minutes before the start, I really only had time for the collect my number, drop my bag and for the obligatory trip to the loo.
The atmosphere This morning was great, with the last of the prudential ride cyclists on the off from the park nearby, the sun was shining and the Run Through event blasting out feel good tunes on their speakers. Just before 9am was our que to follow an official the 0.1mile down the track to the start line for the 13.1 mile race. The atmosphere was particularly eery as we walked these 160meters; as the runners, including myself, marched in silence to the battle line.
The half marathon stated promptly, we were off on our 13.1 mini adventures laps. With yesterday's life choices on my mind, I had decided my race plan was to start slow and likely get slower. The start did not disappoint in this regard as I watched and counted 10, 11, 12, more people peel away at the front. At this event the 1/2 marathoners had the track all to themselves before being joined by the 10 mile race, followed by the 5km 1 mile and finally the 10k at 15 or 30 minutes thereafter. For the first 2 laps I was able to know that a runner passed or fallen behind was on my own race. It was not long into my 3rd lap that the 10 mile race started, and their front boys were on form. When those front runners whooshed past, that was the end of my ability to judge where I was in my race. This made for an fantastic plan B, which was to just run, and enjoy the atmosphere. When the all the additional races joined, there were about 400 people cutting up the Tarmac on the mile route. I was being passed. I was passing others. Fat bottomed girls, and boys but no 'Hot Nephew' in sight. Welcome relief came in the form of ELR cheerleaders returning home from volunteering at the prudential ride London. The verbal encouragement came from en-high, as the cycle track passed under the park road above. The spectators had chosen their position well as the run passed underneath both outbound and return about 5-600 meters later.
As the laps ticked by, my watch bleeped with each kilometre, but I resisted all temptation to look at my splits. I was 5 miles in before I clocked the clock and realised I was bang on 7 minute miles. From this point plan A and plan B were both dropped in favour of plan C. Stick to 7mins/mile.
On a warm morning I took on water on every 3rd lap, and had my gel on the 7th. These seemed to keep me on track, and to my surprise I managed to stick to plan C. At 8 miles in I clocked lance who was arriving for the 10km beginning at 10:15. That gave me a short boost as I entered the business end of the race and the final 5 miles. By now I knew the Tarmac well. Each bend, turn and corner came naturally without thought. I was simply following the 8, 9, 10 that had preceded them. The ups and downs of this track are not as drastic as the Redbridge cycle track, so I did have lucky stars to thank that I was not running 13.1 miles there.
10 laps done, the clock told me I had 21 minutes to finish in sub 1:30. Plan C was softly re-written into plan D, to finish in sub 1:30. That was it, a definitive 7 minutes for each of the last 3 miles. These were tough, but remained steady. I was chuffed to finally finish in 1:29:06, and especially to find that I had gained many places, to come home 4th. 1st vet 40.
An excellent event, well organised, great atmosphere, and perfect for newbies and experienced runners alike. I'll have to return soon, as I feel like I have unfinished business to put right.

Twilight Half Marathon (Redbridge Cycle Circuit) - Saturday 30th July 2016

Mike. The second staging of the Twilight Ultra Run at Redbridge Cylce Circuit, Hog Hill. A choice between a 50k ultra, a marathon or a half marathon. The half marathon consisted of more than 10 laps of the circuit with two very steep hills on each lap. Patrick won the race, retaining his title from last year. The prize - a bottle of wine and free entry into next year's event. Mike entered the race as an alternative to his usual weekend training run. A low key but very well organised and friendly event; with competitors giving encouragement to other runners on the course. (The ultra and marathon runners started their race at earlier times of the day). Water was available at every lap and a cup of tea could also be ordered if required. "Just give us one lap notice and it will be waiting for you" was the instruction from the organiser. A technical tee-shirt and decent medal at the finish, provided overall good value for money. This event is worth a visit next year. Run it for a challenge and a great experience but not a fast time!
