2019 - 20 Mile Water Station on Poplar High Street - Volunteer Team

London Marathon is a very Big Day in the ELR diary, not just for the runners but for the volunteers and the whole club. It’s a day that most people look forward to: either to run in one of the biggest marathons in the world or to be there to support their fellow club runners, friends and family and it’s a great day enjoyed by all.

This year we had 34 runners alongside over 100 volunteers who were all waiting eagerly to cheer on and give some much-needed support to the runners, especially to all our “ELRs” and we hope this gave everyone a boost to continue to the end with a smile.

On behalf of the club we would like to say a BIG thank you to each and everyone of you who came out in force to make the day as successful as it could be, from handing out water, clearing up rubbish and the hardest role of all: opening up bottle lids whilst your fingers are hurting (but don’t worry we promise plenty of gloves for next year)!

These efforts are rewarded with our Club Places for the following year's Marathon, which we ballot to qualifying members come November. You, our members, your family and friends make this possible and we really appreciate it, so again THANK YOU!

We look forward to seeing you all again next year!

25k Special Drinks on Westferry Road - ELR Volunteer Team

The Elite athletes prepare their own drinks in advance and these are delivered to the course at 5km intervals ahead of the race.

East London Runners are responsible for the elite drinks at 25km which is situated on Westferry Road. Having arrived at the water station at 7:30am, the London Marathon team delivering the drinks arrived on time and were on their way soon after with the chain of custody documents duly signed.

The team who look after signage and other tasks soon arrived with the tables and barriers. Whilst this was being set up we sorted the bottles into men and women's and by table. Each runner knows their table number in advance and the position their drink bottle will be in on that table. There are four tables for the elite men and women and two tables for the para athletes. A simple yet critical task.

One of the para athletes this year was a double amputee who required assistance with his bottle, but we were not permitted to run with him, as this may have been considered as pacing. Here’s an action shot of him receiving his water as he passed the station.

It’s a fast operation here. As soon as the female runners start to come through we are preparing for the men, and then as soon as they are through the whole table and screening needs to be dismantled to clear the full width of the road for the mass runners. By the time they arrive there would be no trace of the elite drinks having existed. Quite a strange phenomenon.

So that’s it, until next year. Post marathon is a strange time for us all in many ways. For runners you’re left bewildered as to what to do with all the free time; if you were involved in planning the event, whether that be organising volunteers, making Costco trips, or on the day it does feel very similar in that there’s nothing to worry about.

All in all it was an amazing day once again. Elite drinks were managed so well by the crew - Paul and Miranda Thompson, Grant Conway, John Paul Healy and yours truly. Thank you all for your assistance on the day and putting on a great show for the elite runners who needed us. ELR do the best water stations, don’t they?

St Matthias Church Hall 2019 - ELR Volunteer Team

Gotta love a job that involves a trip to Costco. *Slightly* disappointed that I wasn’t allowed to buy an inflatable kayak or bouncy slide. ‘It’s not on the list Maya.’ So I had to be satisfied with enough crisps, pastries, muffins and sandwiches to feed a small army. And at 7am on Marathon morning, the army arrived. Seventy hungry marshals were pleased to see breakfast laid out for them, and while they received their briefing, Jan, Jo and I set out everything anyone could possibly want for a packed lunch. If they were pleased by breakfast, they were delighted by lunch! Vegan and gluten friendly options meant everyone was happy, and we were given so many compliments on the size of the feast and the options available. And then they fly the nest. Aw. I hate saying goodbye to them all! Time for a quick tidy up, and then the water station workers, St Johns Ambulance, and Police come in to hoover up the leftovers throughout the rest of the day. Topping up the urn was a bigger job this year in the colder weather! It’s my third year of doing the marshal food station, and I love it.
