May 2015 - Maya Goodwin and Bozena Myslinska

Congratulations to Maya and Bozena, Club Runners of the Month for May 2015.

Maya Goodwin - Maya has been instrumental(with Julie Crefield) in setting up ELR Beginners Group this month. Maya's enthusiasm is also felt by not just the Beginners but by all the runners in the Club.

Bozena Myslinska. - Bozena completed her Team 24 hour relay race this month and then ran for ELR in ELVIS 1 two days later. She has also been a regular attender on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Maya said " I just *may* have mentioned my club, East London Runners on occasion. Well this makes me Friday night happy on a Sunday night!

And I couldn't be more proud to share it with Bozena. As well as two PBs for the Westminster mile and the BUPA 10,000, she recently ran as part of a team in Hope 24, a 24 hour endurance relay, where you try as a team to cover as many miles as possible over 24 hours. Boz ran over 30 miles. AWESOME.

Fantastic performance in the Manchester Marathon too!"

Russell replied "Firstly, I am very honoured to win this, with so many great performances and inspiring stories this month. Well done to ELR for having such an amazing community of runners! And well done to all you individuals who have done amazingly, some stunning performances and inspiring journeys!

Can't wait to catch up with you all on Friday (Red Lion, Leytonstone) and Saturday (Wanstead parkrun)!"

Secondly, I would like to introduce you to my next challenge: a 24 hour race for a (slightly ironic) charity but which means a lot to me. I wasn’t always able to enjoy an active lifestyle in the way that I can now…

January 2015 - Phillippa Walker

Pip said "You need to put all of this into context too…. I have been adverse to sport of any type pretty much ALL of my life, it started at school which just put me off and it was not until my early 30’s I found a gym that I actually liked and started going regularly. Back in the day the thought of ever joining a running club, well it would never have crossed my mind. I’ve only been a member of East London Runners since November 2014, first only attending track sessions, but have recently tried the social runs too, and although at the back of the field, I love it. I would like to say that running the marathon has been a lifelong ambition, and well that is partly true, as every year I watch it I think wouldn’t that be great to give it a go someday, but then nothing changes. Someday never arrived…. until 2014.

In May 2014 I ran my first 10k after signing up for the Royal Parks Half on a whim and getting a charity place for MIND, a charity I have a great deal of time and respect for. I surprised myself with the 10k, yes it was hard but I didn’t give up and was determined to run it all which I did. Running after that became a bit more part of my routine, although the training for the half wasn’t quite as structured as it should have been. However, come race day, I got round and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Just as well really as 2 days before the race I found I had successfully gained a charity spot for MIND for the Virgin Money London Marathon 2015!

I would like to say that running the marathon has been a lifelong ambition, and well that is partly true, as every year I watch it I think wouldn’t that be great to give it a go someday, but then nothing changes. Someday never arrived…. until 2014.

I am loving the challenge of training for the London Marathon and excited for race day. I’ll report back to let you know if that’s still the case post event.
